I loved my independence as an athlete. Everything I did, was for my own success.
Of course, there are many factors that are playing a role in success. No one can succeed without a team, a training facility, or other support. But having all of this no one can succeed without putting in their own effort either. And depending on how much of the right effort an athlete is putting in towards their own success, as more independency, an athlete can build up.
My coach didn´t feel the need to control me all the time, at least he was not worried I didn´t train enough. This gave me the freedom, to do sessions on my own when I thought this would work better for me. Of course, I had to earn that privilege, and keeping it was one of the goals.
I loved being an athlete, loved calling the woods my office, and meeting athletes, coaches, and team members of many other countries. Compete with them, celebrate with them, and connect with them.
That's how I met my now-husband - an Amerian Biathlete, who I wanted to visit throughout the year when it was possible. Being an athlete, who liked to take on lots of ownership gave me independence and the opportunity to train at his place. I could travel to the USA for a couple of weeks and do my work, a place, where many other people come for vacation. This is the life!
This life I had to earn. If I would not perform well in the season, I would not have been on the team, and I would not have been able to be an athlete and with that, I would not have been able to live this life. The good thing was I wanted to be successful anyway and loved to train - so all of this was pure joy.
Salty sweat can offer pretty sweet things. ;)
